Tips on blood pressure for DOT/CDL physical exams

If you are on medication for high blood pressure take it as prescribed without skipping doses. We have drivers who prefer to come in the morning when their blood pressure tends to be lower. There are other drivers who will do the physical on a day off from work.

We do make every attempt to get an acceptable reading at the time of the physical. We start off with taking the blood pressure and if it is over 139/89 we will have the driver sit for 10 minutes with the lights off in the room and their cell phone off to relax. If the blood pressure again is high after 10 minutes we will have the driver laid down for 20 minutes. The majority of times we are able to get the correct blood pressure the first time, but there are a number of drivers who have to wait 10 minutes and this usually works. A smaller percentage have to lay down for 20 minutes. Sometimes blood pressure is increased with weight gain and sometimes drivers on blood pressure medication for extended times just have to have the medication dosage adjusted or medication changes to get readings that are under 140/90.
